Marketing Fundamentals In A COVID-19 Economy

A few weeks ago, a local business person reached out an invited me to facilitate conversations about marketing for a MeetUp group for entrepreneurs.

I’m always interested in meeting new people and sharing ideas, so naturally, I agreed to participate in the event.

Originally, the topic of the MeetUp was going to be “Marketing Fundamentals”. I felt that all of the MeetUp members would find value in this content.

As we neared today’s date, the organizer and I decided it would be better to make the topic more relevant to our current situation. It turned into “Marketing Fundamentals in a COVID-19 Economy”.

Instead of meeting everyone in-person, we joined a teleconference. We covered a lot of valuable stuff, including:

  1. Defining terms like in-bound marketing, outbound marketing, and education-based marketing
  2. The three essential components of marketing
  3. Common marketing mistakes
  4. Guiding marketing principles

I created a concise, double-sided, 1-page handout outlining all of these points for members of the MeetUp. It occurred to me that you may also appreciate having this resource. So if you’d like a copy, just email and I’ll send it along.

Before we finished the teleconference, the organizer asked me about what kind of message I’m sharing with my community about the COVID-19 situation. This is what I said…

We cannot choose the conditions that we are born into, but we can choose how we respond to our conditions. To state it differently: we cannot control the COVID-19 pandemic or the global economy, but we can control how we respond to them.

COVID-19 economyWe can choose our behaviours and mindset; how we interact with people, who we interact with, the information we consume, habits we develop, and our general outlook.

Ultimately, we have a choice between pessimism, which breeds doom and gloom, and optimism, which breeds opportunity and contentment. It is this choice – our overarching response to the conditions – that determines both where we end up and the quality of our journey.

It’s not easy. The COVID-19 pandemic is a difficult situation that many professional practices and businesses in general won’t survive. Some people won’t survive. It is a challenge to say the least.

But we can all choose to live and “play” in the lighter and brighter world of optimism. This is my preference, and I encourage everyone to make the same choice.
