If you know anything about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), you know that adding quality content to your website is the first step in getting better exposure on search engines like Google. You may also know that SEO is a deep topic and there are many different factors that make for good exposure on search engines. One of these other factors involves getting backlinks.
A backlink is when a website links to a page on an external website. For example, if another website links to a page on your website, they have given you a backlink. In general, this improves your website’s SEO.
I was fortunate to be able to attend MozCon 2020, one of the leading SEO and marketing conferences worldwide. During this conference, I gathered insights into the types of content that most often gets backlinks.
SEO experts have discovered that original research gets more backlinks than just about any other type of content. To find relevant research topics, we ask: What do people in your industry frequently say without citing supporting research? Examples that come to mind represent opportunities. You can win SEO value by doing and sharing the research, or summarizing research in a way that no one else has.
Let’s think about this… People who are bold get more attention than people who are meek and mild. Therefore, it makes sense that people who express bold opinions on their websites get more backlinks than people who say the same old stuff that others say. To share strong opinions, we ask: What do you believe that many people disagree with? What questions are your competitors afraid to answer?
Authoring a guide, report, or book is a great strategy for building authority. As it turns out, it’s also a great SEO strategy. Your information product should have its own page on your website. Make sure to present your information product in an attractive way so that people want to link to the page and request the information.
Let me give you examples. If you’re a lawyer, maybe you have a claim calculator on your website to help people understand the value of their case. If you own a medical spa, maybe you have a questionnaire to help people determine whether they’re a candidate for a particular service. Tools such as these, so long as they are presented in an attractive way and actually useful, tend to get backlinks and improve your website’s SEO.
We often forget that every profession has its own terminology that laypeople don’t fully understand. Using definitions in your content or even having a dictionary on your website for terms in your industry is another way to get backlinks. Furthermore, it helps to improve communication with prospective clients.
